  4. I’ve just been looking through the new build of YUI. I’m impressed and it seems to have come a long way since the first download I had, which was pre v1.0.

    One thing I would suggest:

I am delighted to see that the library is designed with XHTML validation in mind.

However, when it comes to the Grid set, the CSS is invalid as it uses CSS Hacks to get around some of the IE issues.

I have long been a proponent of using conditional comments to get around IE issues, and I think it wouldn’t take too much work or documentation to fix this situation.

The ideal situation is to have an IE specific style sheet (or one for each different version of IE that requires fixes), using conditional comments in the head of the html to load these.

My final comment regards the YUI examples. These are great and have proved very helpful in working out the ins and outs of the YUI. However a lot of the pages fail validation. The funny thing about this is that they are failing validation due to very minor issues with the HTML, such as block elements being empty eg

or in the case of javascript embedding using:

This fails validation as it is just missing “type=”text/javascript”!

Fairly minor issues, but it seems like you almost need someone to proof read the code across the library.

  5. @Alex: Fair comments all. Documentation is a journey and not a destination, and we definitely have tried to err on the side of having copious examples at the expense of having them standardized or meticulously edited. We will over time improve the examples’ quality, their exposition, and the consistency of the navigation when you’re in that part of the site. Would be interested to hear more in the YUI forums about your thoughts on Grids and how to improve! Regards, Eric

  6. @Eric: Hey Eric. I think you’re definitely on the right track. After looking at a large variety of libraries I eventually plumbed for the YUI, initially as a result of it being the most standard compliant option, but I stuck around when I discovered that the documentation was a step above the rest.

I’m looking forward to getting to know it and will definitely drop in to the forums. Looking forward to seeing things develop.
